Running a Clean City: An Environmental Conservation Viewpoint

clean city

Large cities such as London, Manchester and Leeds are continually facing an increase in population due to the rise in rural-to-urban migration. Population growth is often accompanied by a subsequent increase in the volume of generated waste. The cities should therefore put in place stringent measures to remain clean despite the growing population. A clean city improves the livelihood of its dwellers and maintains its attractiveness as a tourist destination. In contrast, a littered city is unappealing.

Proper waste disposal

Local governments should install waste bins at multiple spots around their cities. Buildings should also have proper waste disposal practices. There are businesses that offer waste skips for hire that building owners may contract with for the aggregation of all generated wasted. Waste skips are convenient as they can hold large volumes of waste all at once. They have special features like rear-hinged doors that can be opened allowing one to walk into the bin or use a trolley to dispose of the garbage.

Most city councils provide public garbage bins that are strategically placed in various points of the city. People should take advantage of those litterbins to avoid careless dumping. Liquid effluents should also be disposed of well. Efficient sewer lines that run to the city’s treatment plant should be installed and maintained. The maintenance and repair of sewer lines should also be scheduled and conducted regularly. A city that lacks proper waste disposal methods acts as a breeding ground for disease-causing microorganisms and insects that pose a threat to the city’s occupants. Moreover, such a city lacks aesthetic value and is a turn-off to tourists.

Littering fines

Monetary penalties may be imposed on improper disposal methods. Citizens should be encouraged to report any instances of illegal dumping to the relevant authorities. Moreover, city councils’ dumping patrols should be on the lookout for any illegal dumpers. Illegal littering causes a reduction in property value, safety, and appearance and thus, should be avoided.

Small actions such as stickers on a sidewalk that remind and encourage citizens to avoid littering go a long way in keeping a city clean.

Public transportation

Emissions from automobiles are the largest source of air pollution in cities. Public transportation minimizes the carbon footprint by reducing the number of cars in transit. Vehicles should be fitted with efficient car exhaust systems that are well-maintained and keep harmful emissions to a minimum.

The use of clean automobiles in cities significantly reduces pollution. Carbon monoxide and greenhouse emissions degrade the environment and are harmful to the health of the city dwellers. They deplete the ozone layer causing a change in weather patterns. Moreover, they cause health problems such as asthma after prolonged exposure. Relevant authorities should strive to keep automobile emissions at bay for the health of the people and conservation of the environment.

Living in a safe environment is important for the health and wellbeing of all living things. A clean environment is a perfect way of conserving nature. Taking care of your immediate environment should be your priority.
